Ammonium (NH4+), with a positive charge, is much less mobile as it is retained in soil colloids. Nitrification inhibitors work by reducing the rate of conversion of ammonium (NH4+) to nitrate (NO3-) and, therefore, reducing the potential for leaching and the consequent accumulation in aquifers.
