Ammonium (NH4+), with a positive charge, is much less mobile as it is retained in the soil colloids. Nitrification inhibitors act by reducing the rate of conversion of ammonium (NH4+) to nitrate (NO3-) and, therefore, reducing the leaching potential and the consequent accumulation in aquifers.
